Protected photosensitive recording films

Photosensitive films (20) which are protected by suitable barrier materials (32) are described. The protective barriers (32) form a film on at least one surface (30) of a layer of photosensitive material (26) and the protective barriers (32) are water soluble polymeric materials having a refractive index similar to the refractive index of the recording film (20). The protected photosensitive recording films (20) are useful for recording high efficiency holograms on photopolymers in the presence of index matching immersion oils.
