<p>The system consists of, firstly, a network of radio direction finders (41 ... 4n) coupled to at least one computer and placed in well-defined locations in the zones of a region, and, secondly, a set of radio distress beacons (2) placed inside vehicles (1) travelling through these zones. The computer (6) includes means for processing the data transmitted by the distress beacons together with linking means for locating and identifying the beacons in the region transmitting the distress signals and for transmitting the corresponding data to the rescue services (9) nearest the transmitting beacons.
