Described are 3,5-dimethyl-pentenyl-dihydro-2(3H)-furanone isomer mixtures defined according to the structure: <IMAGE> wherein structure represents mixtures wherein in the mixture in each of the compounds, one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and the other of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon single bond, processes for preparing same and uses thereof in augmenting or enhancing the aroma of consumable materials including perfume compositions, colognes and perfumed articles (e.g., solid or liquid anionic, cationic, nonionic or zwitterionic detergents, hair preparations, fabric softeners, fabric softener articles, cosmetic powders and perfumed polymers). Also described is a process for preparing such 3,5-dimethyl-pentenyl-dihydro-2(3H)-furanone isomer mixtures using as a starting material 2,7-octadienol having the structure: <IMAGE> as well as the process intermediates having the structures: <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> and <IMAGE> wherein R represents C1-C4 alkyl; R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represents 2,7-octadienyl or R.
