<p>The array plate (10) consists of at least one layer of material (22) connected to the craft (12) and sonar elements (14) which are located on the layer (22) and pass through additional layers (16,18) of material with selected natural vibration frequencies throughout the sonar operating frequency range, so that standing waves of selected wavelengths develop along the layers. The additional layers of material (16, 18) have selected dimensions, mass and stiffness, and are made from a layer of viscoelastic material between two more rigid material layers. The viscoelastic layer is made from butyl rubber, and the rigid layers of carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium or titanium. The sonar elements mounted on the array plate are spaced at intervals of half the average wavelength of their natural frequency.</p> |
