The pad has an outer plastics covering, and an inner filling of clay mixed with paraffin oil, water, an anti-freeze liquid or beeswax. The covering is made from two transparent plastics films, e.g. 30 x 40 cm and 50 microns thick, with a detachable fastening round the outer edge, e.g. in the form of a groove around one layer and a matching tongue around the other. The filling material can be heated or cooled before application to a patient, and the covering can be opened to allow direction contact with the filling. In the latter case the mixture of clay and beeswax can contain essential oils, a thermal mud or seaweed.
