The system includes a set of three rigidly interconnected sensors forming a right-angle triangular array positioned under one of the feet (P1-P4) of the bed in order to support a part of the overall load. The sensors detect the loads (F1-F3) at the points of contact (A-C) with the floor. After a simple calibration the position of the centre of mass (G) of the bed and patient can be computed w.r.t orthogonal axes (OX, OY) parallel to two edges of the triangle. Movements of the patient can be monitored from the observed variations of the ratios of the three detected loads. If the gravity centre reach a 'forbidden area', an alarm is actuated.
