PURPOSE:To obtain a small-sized and effective diffraction element and an optical pickup such as an magneto-optic disk which easily and reliably detects reproduced signals using the diffraction element. CONSTITUTION:In a first diffraction section 31, diffracted light beams L11, L12 of a returned light beam is produced so that the consecutive directions of the diffracted light beams L11, L12 are inclined to the polarization direction of the returned light beam. In a continued second diffraction section 32, diffracted light beams L21, L22 are generated for the component of the returned light beam not subjected to the effect of diffraction in the first diffraction section 31. |
