Liquid crystal display with diffusing white matrix grid

The liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal film between a transparent layer supporting an electrode matrix and a second transparent layer (30) supporting an opposing electrode. The diffusing layer (40) is deposited on the first layer between the electrodes or on the opposing electrode. The apertures (42) have dimensions matching the electrodes in the matrix. The diffusing layer is less than 5 micrometres thick and is a metal taken from aluminium, chromium, gold, silver, nickel. It may be aluminium covered in indium-tin oxide. Alternative diffusers are a white pigment in organic solvent or a polymer film with surface microcracks.
