PURPOSE:To improve dependency on visual fields, to prevent blurring of a display by a parallax and to obtain the high-fineness display by subjecting second columns existing in the central part of a liquid crystal layer to a perpendicular orientation treatment, thereby horizontally arranging the liquid crystal molecules in the central parts of the liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display element includes two sheets of electrode substrates 12a, 12b which have electrodes and are disposed to face each other apart a spacing of a thickness (d) and a liquid crystal layer 18 which is held in the spacing. The element is provided with the second columns 16a which are regularly arranged on either one of the electrode substrate 12a or 12b within the spacing, have a height(h) attaining h>d/2 and are perpendicularly oriented in the side walls in the position h=d/2. The wall surfaces of the second columns 16a existing in the spacing of the prescribed thickness are subjected to the perpendicular orientation treatment in such a manner and, therefore, the liquid crystal molecules 18b in the central part of the liquid crystal layer 18 are perpendicular and fixedly arranged to the wall surfaces of the second columns 16a. The element is thus so constituted as not to make electric field response even if voltage is impressed thereto. Namely, the liquid crystals 18 in the central part of the liquid crystal layer 18 are kept oriented in a horizontal direction at all times with both electrode substrates 12a, 12b. |
