The sealing mechanism for a plastics bag and the like, in a packaging machine, has at least one sealing pad (20) divided in the sealing force (F) direction through an assembly of flat sealing segments (21) next to each other and at least partially flat. The plate segments (21) have oblong sealing surfaces (21b) across the sealing seam, and the segments (21) are moved by the sealing pressure in the holder (22) along the sealing force (F) line to move separately against each other and against the holder (22). The segment holder (23) is heated and takes up the sealing force (F).
