Silicon nitride sintered product consists of not less than 70 mol.% beta -silicon nitride, and an element of gp. IIIa, at least lutecium, and oxygen as impurity. When the gp. IIIa element amt. and the oxygen amt. are calculated as RE2O3 of the gp. IIIa element and as SiO2 amt. corresponding to the oxygen, the total amt. of both components is 2-30 mol.%, and the mol. ratio SiO2/RE2O3 is 1.6-10. The intergranular phase of the sintered product contains a crystalline phase consisting of gp. IIIa element, silicon and oxygen. Prodn. of the sintered product is also claimed.
