Carbon body having good oxidation resistance

A carbon body is provided with a converted porous layer by etching and reacting with gaseous boron oxide. This produces a porous boron carbide coating. A vitreous coating is then produced on the boron carbide which at least partially fills the pores. The vitreous coating contains compounds from silicon nitride, silicon oxynitride and a mixture of these.
