A data card uses a high-resolution optical laser recording material, for instance a metal-containing foil which adheres to the card. A strip of this material has a recording capacity of at least 250000 data bits which are represented by optically contrasting spots having a dimension of less than 25 mu m. The optical contrast of the spots with respect to the area surrounding them is at least 2:1. The strip can exhibit a prerecorded formatting pattern for positioning, timing, programming and similar functions.
