The beer mat (2,3) is made of absorbent material. This enables it to soak up spilled liquid and prevent formation of drinks marks on the table. The beer mat also has a dry area (2), possibly separated by perforations from the absorbent area. This dry area forms forming a talon with serial number to keep records of drinks supplied. This is then detached and presented as the bill.
