A safety helmet has a number of interlocked segments (10,20,30,40) each with a plastics foam core (12,22,42) and a covering layer (11,21,41) with mounting fittings to lock adjacent segments together, with at least one holder (61) and a plug (70). The plastics core (12,22,42) is shaped in a mould containing the laid covering material (11,21,41) and foamed. Adjacent segments (10,20,30,40) have complementary mating surfaces round their periphery formed at the surfaces of the plastics cores (12,22,42). The holders (61) are embedded in the plastics cores (11,22,42) and anchored, to form a holding shaft (64) at right angles to the mating surfaces and flush with them, aligned with the holders in adjacent segments (10,20,30,40). Each plug (70) is an independent longitudinal body, which can be manipulated, with two opposing end sections (75,76) which, when inserted into the holding shafts (64), form a durable non-release bond between the segments. The plastics core is a soft or semi-hard polyurethane foam such as for backing deep-drawn film. The covering layer (11,21,41) is of leather or a similar material, with an acrylic varnish coating where in contact with the plastics core. The prodn. of the helmet is also claimed.
