A data-transmitting apparatus contains first and second transmitters (32T and 42T), a connecting unit (48), and a transmit transfomer (44T). The first transmitter filters data to produce outgoing data transmitted to the transformer at a first data rate. The second transmitter transmits outgoing data to the transformer at a second data rate different from the first data rate. The connecting unit is used in coupling the transformer to an outgoing twisted-pair cable (56T). A data-receiving apparatus contains first and second receivers (32R and 42R), a connecting unit (48), and a receive transformer (44R). The connecting unit is used in coupling an incoming twisted-pair cable (56R) to the receive transformer. The first and second receivers receive incoming data from the secondary winding respectively at the first and second data rates. Incoming data is provided along data transfer paths that extend from the receive transformer in a daisy chain manner to the receivers. The transmit and receive apparatuses are typically combined to form a composite transceiver apparatus. Data moving at either of the data rates can thus be transmitted and received without the need for hot switching in the data paths. Optical cables, including an optical transceiver, can be used in combination with, or in place of, the twisted-pair cables.
|
