A compound metal strip (1) consisting of at least two constituent strips (2,3) is produced by simultaneously and continuously pouring their melts (4,5) each side of a separator unit (8) into a continuous casting mould (14), letting them solidify into the compound strip, and extracting the latter from the mould by means of an extractor table (16). The level of the separator unit (8) is arranged so that the melts (4,5) come into local contact and merge ahead of the solidification front.
