The surface of the card is provided with characteristic signs of wear in the form of a digital image. the image is analysed so that the characteristic signs of wear are detected and defined as features. These features are stored. The actual features of the signs of wear and tear are compared with the stored features of the card and a coincidence value determined. The cards is not accepted if the value is less than a fixed threshold value. The card is accepted if the coincidence value is greater than the threshold value and the changed features overwritten by the actual features.
