The safety device is for a vehicle (1) with monocoque structure closed from above behind the driver's seat. In the event of impact with another vehicle or with a fixed object, the driver's seat (6) is moved backwards until the head and torso of the driver are protected by the closed part (10) of the monocoque structure (2). On impact, a force is released which moves the seat backwards. The driver may wear a protective helmet (38), which moves back with the seat. The movement of the helmet is synchronised with that of the seat. After the operation of a release device, the seat is held in a position in which the driver's head and torso of mainly within the part of the monocoque structure closed from above.
