The holder (1) has a conically formed recess with a drive face (1.1) and an annular gap (1.3) between the pipe end (4) and the lower portion of the recess. A concentrically mounted pin (2) locates and supports the pipe. A flange (5) is connected to the pipe end by driving it axially toward (5.1) the holder. The drive faces forces the inner circumference of the flange into the pipe material. The annular gap allows the pipe to bulge (1.2) and deform radially outward to produce a smooth transition from the end to the flange.
