An antigen that comprises or consists of a peptide having the following sequence: DRQISNISSTIYEEIQKAQVQQEQNEKKLLELD (SEQ. ID. NO. 1) or that has the antigenic properties of that peptide, may be used to detect antibodies to HIV-1 group O. It is advantageous to incorporate the antigen in an HIV-1 assay, preferably also with an antigen from the presumptive immunodominant region of the transmembrane glycoprotein gp41 of HIV-1 group O. HIV-2 antigens may also be incorporated in the assay.
