Melamine-formaldehyde resin dispersions containing more free formaldehyde than is desirable for health and/or pollution reasons can be treated with diketo reagents or their nitrogen analogs to reduce the free formaldehyde content while not diminishing, and in some cases even enhancing, the ability of the dispersions to detackify paint. Preferably, the resin dispersions are also treated with urea, which allows considerably less acetoacetamide to be used to achieve the same amount of formaldehyde reduction. |
