The anti-theft device has a mechanical lock for the gear change mechanism (2), adjacent to the gear lever (1). The locking mechanism is an electric actuator, operated remotely by a control switch (20,28). This control switch may be operated by a key, or by a receiving sensor (28) operated by a remote control transmitter (30). The electrical circuit may include the vehicle lighting switch, which with the control switch, are arranged so that the actuator maintains the locked position, when the lighting switch is in the engine off position and the control switch is open.
