A vehicle spare wheel storage apparatus (10) includes a mechanism (34) for moving a spare wheel (20) between a storage position (30) and an unloading position, and a wheel presentation mechanism (18) formed of first and second elongated, flexible members (40, 44) for presenting the wheel (20) extending at least to a partially exposed unloading position (28) from underneath the vehicle (12), wherein the spare wheel (20) extends generally horizontally with a portion protruding outwardly from a vertical plane through an outermost external periphery of the vehicle body contour (26). The first and second members (40, 44) are connected to the vehicle body portion (42) at positions disposed between the storage position (30) and the vertical plane (102). Each of the flexible members (40, 44) has one end connected to a wheel engaging member (38), and an opposite end connected to the vehicle body portion (42) at positions spaced laterally from one another with respect to the path of travel of the spare wheel for providing lateral stability of the spare wheel (20).
