A device for capturing an animal including a frame (1); a pair of jaws (3 and 4) with opposite ends pivotably mounted to the frame (1), each of said jaws (3 and 4) being movable from a first position where said jaws (3 and 4) are pulled apart, to a second position where the jaws (3 and 4) engage the paw of the captured animal; and a cord (29) with opposite ends, one end being secured to a non-return sliding member engaging an intermediate portion of the cord (29) to form a retaining loop, while the other end is attached to an anchoring member. Said retaining loop is located beneath the jaws (3 and 4) in said first position. The device further comprises an assembly for leading the retaining loop from a point located beneath the jaws (3 and 4) when said jaws (3 and 4) are in the first position, to a point located on the paw of the captured animal and beyond said jaws (3 and 4) in said second position.
