The high-tension switch operated by the proposed device comprises a multiplicity of controllable semiconductor elements which become conductive when illuminated with light. The light energy is transmitted through an optical waveguide or optical fibre, the angle between the waveguide or fibre and the switch being 5 to 20 DEG and the waveguide or fibre being cut at angle at the switch end to give an elliptical section.
