The device has a buoyancy body which consists of two buoyancy elements (10,12). These are connected and may be separated when required, but remain connected via a rope (22). The rescuer is placed on the connected device, and moves towards the person in trouble. The elements are then separated, one is given to the person, and the rescuer retains the other one. The element retained by the rescuer is connected via a line to an anchor on the beach. This consists of a carriage with a wheel to retain the elements. The connection between the elements cannot be released, while they are retained on the beach anchor.
