A control system is proposed for mobile machinery, in particular for construction machines such as excavators, wheel loaders, graders and the like. The system comprises at least two local control units which are functionally independent of each other for actuating various sensors and/or actuators. As part of a mutual monitoring process, the control units exchange status messages at predetermined intervals concerning their respective operating statuses via at least one data bus line.
