Vibration damper

A vibration damper has a cylinder and piston connected to two masses moving relative to each other. The working fluid during the movement flows through a valve 20 which has at least one section 40 throttling at least part of the fluid. This section is supplied with a control pressure from a throttle valve 34. The throttle valve can be switched into at least three discrete positions. It has a magnet 58 moving the body 70 into these positions, against restoring springs 56,57. In the output position of the body, the damping force reaches a value suitable for emergency damping, which is smaller than the largest adjustable force and also larger than the smallest adjustable force.
