The device comprises a shaft in which an upper and lower packing elements. The upper packing element is formed by a turnable flap (32) outside the cross section of the shaft (Q). The flap is pivoted from closed position into open position, in feed direction (y) of the food (44). The lower packing element (33) is formed by a slide. The lower packing element may also be formed by a flap, which is moved from closed into open position in feed direction of the food. When in closed position, each flap occupies only part of the cross section of the shaft. This part is adjusted by changing the pivot angle of the flap.
