Anhydride gp.-contg. soluble polymers (A) are obtd. by radical copolymerisation of a monomer mixt. contg. difunctional unsatd. acid anhydride(s) of formula (I) and other vinyl and/or (meth)acrylic comonomers (II) in a soln. contg. 10-60 wt.% inert solvent (w.r.t. anhydrides) at 100-230 deg C, using a monomer mixt. contg. 5-90 wt.% (I), continuing the reaction until the polymerisation yield is at least 95% and then working up the soln. to give (A). In (I), R1, R2 = H or 1-4C aliphatic hydrocarbyl; R3 = H or 1-8C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbyl. Also claimed is the resin soln. obtd. from the above copolymerisation process. Pref. (I) is acrylic anhydride, methacrylic anhydride, acrylic-methacrylic mixed anhydride or any mixt. thereof. Comonomers (II) comprise vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, styrene, substd. styrenes, (meth)acrylic acid and corresp. esters, amides or nitriles, itaconic anhydride, itaconate esters, maleic anhydride, maleate esters and fumarate esters. Suitable solvents are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, alkylaromatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, ethers, glycol ether esters, amides, alkylene carbonates, sulphoxides, nitriles, nitro-hydrocarbons, carbamates and/or ureas.
