Method and equipment for rapid charging of accumulators

A method and equipment for the initial or subsequent charging of nickel-cadmium or metal-hydride accumulators employs a pulsed DC source which delivers an approximately rectangular charging current (I1) having maximum/minimum amplitudes and a mean level of several amps at a controlled repetition frequency depending on accumulator type. Charging patterns for eg. a nickel-cadmium cell are typically 2.5 sec pulses having a 6 amp max/3 amp min. at 100 msec intervals and for a metal-hydride cell 2 sec pulses having an 8 amp max/4 amp min. at 6 sec intervals. The longer interval in the latter case is due to the increased heat sensitivity of the metal-hydride cell.
