HINGED PACKAGE HAVING AN ADJUSTABLE COVER

In accordance with the present invention there is provided a package (1) having a closed position and an open position. The package (1) has a cover (10) and a base (20) including a peripheral wall (22). The peripheral wall (22) abuts against the cover when the package (1) is in its closed position so as to define an interior compartment (30). The package (1) also includes a hinge (50) connecting the base (20) and the cover (10) together along the back portion of the package which allows the cover to pivot around the hinge placing the package in its open position. The hinge is located along the exterior of the peripheral wall and includes a downwardly extending hinge arm (70) connected to the cover. The hinge arm (70) is connected to the base by a pin (55) which allows the cover and the hinge arm to pivot around the pin. The hinge arm has an outer surface (71) which makes frictional contact with the base as the hinge arm is pivoted so that the cover can pivot to a desired angle with respect to the base and remain stationary. In a preferred embodiment, the hinge arm (70) contacts the base (20) along a flexible contact area (27) on the peripheral wall and the outer surface on the hinge arm has a profiled outer surface (72) which makes greater frictional contact with the base as the cover is pivoted to greater angles with respect to the base.
