An extensible and self-retractable cable device having, in one embodiment, a casing (14) for storing winding cable such as a telephone cord (12), two reels (140, 142), two spring housings (20, 22), and two springs (16, 18) mounted in the spring housings within the casing for automatically retracting the cord. The device enables the manual withdrawal and automatic re-entry of a telephone cord connecting a handset (510) to the base of a telephone set (500), thus preventing the telephone cord from becoming crinkled and coiled up in an objectionable manner.
