An apparatus for operating discharge lamps for stable supply of a predetermined electric current to a discharge lamp with constituent elements effective to dimensionally minimize the device is provided by inserting in a power supply circuit from a first power source to the lamp a capacitor means as a second power source, in a closed loop including the first and second power sources a first switch, and in a further closed loop including the second power source and discharge lamp a second switch, and enabling ON/OFF control of the first and second switches by a controller for executing a charging of the capacitor means as the second power source and its discharging until substantial termination of the lamp current flowing through the lamp.
