<p>A de-icing system includes a thin sheet (100) of a shape memory alloy mounted over the leading edge surface (105) of an aircraft, with an electric heating layer (110) and a compressible polymer layer (120) therebetween. Upon detection of ice accretion on the surface of sheet (100), electric heating layer (110) heats the shape memory alloy layer to return it to its undeformed shape, thereby removing ice therefrom.</p> |
