<p>A method of tensioning a bolt (6) interconnecting first and second flanges (2, 4) comprises the steps of locating the bolt (6) to be tensioned in a carrier (16) incorporating hydraulic tensioning means (18, 20, 22), positioning the carrier (16) on the first flange (2) so that the lower end extent (8) of the bolt extends through the flanges (2, 4) providing anchor means (28) at or adjacent the second flange (4) into which said lower end extent (8) of the bolt (6) is received to be retained thereby, actuating the hydraulic tensioning means (18, 20, 22) to tension the bolt (6) by reaction against the first flange (2), turning a primary nut (14) carried on the bolt (6) relative to the bolt (6) into an operative position to retain said tension, deactivating the hydraulic tensioning means (18, 20, 22), and removing the carrier (16) from the bolt (6). On de-tensioning of the bolt (6), the bolt (6) is removed from the joint together with the carrier (16).</p> |
