The present invention relates to a process for controlling pests with phosphine gas which is released from an applicator having gas and humidity pervious walls, containing a hydrolysable metal phosphide by the admission of humidity through such walls. The rate of hydrolysis of the metal phosphide and release of the phosphine is limited by restricting the combination of surface area and moisture premeability of the walls of the applicator thereby retarding the admission of humidity to the metal phosphide.
