摘要 PURPOSE:To prevent movement of liquid crystal molecules and fluctuation in thickness of a liquid crystal layer in a cell in a uniformly oriented state accompanied with driving and to obtain good switching characteristics by subjecting an LB film to orientation processing with controlled strength so that the orientation of the pretilt angle of the LB oriented film is compensated. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display element consists of a pair of glass substrates 21, 21' having transparent electrodes 22, 22' comprising indium tin oxide or the like and a ferroelectric liquid crystal 25 having at least two optically stable states disposed between the glass substrates. LB oriented films 23, 23' comprising LB films or deriv. of a LB film material are formed on at least one substrate. The LB films are subjected to orientation processing in the opposite direction to the moving direction of the substrate when all of the layers of the last layer of the LB films are formed. Thereby, the orientation of the pretilt angle on the substrate plane is compensated to render the average pretilt angle to almost 0 deg..
