PURPOSE:To provide a residual toner detecting device capable of precisely detecting a little residual toner housed in a toner container and attaining a desired residual toner detection. CONSTITUTION:The residual toner detecting device is provided with the toner container housing toner, an agitator used as a toner stirring means stirring the toner and a toner moving means moving a part of the toner housed in the toner container to the outside of it, a residual toner detecting sensor 5 outputting a signal in accordance with the amount of the toner in the toner container, an output maximum value detecting means 21 detecting the minimum value of the output signal of the residual toner detecting sensor 5, an output minimum value detecting means 22 detecting the minimum value of the output signal of the sensor 5 and a comparing means 24 outputting the signal in accordance with the differential signal between the output maximum and minimum value detecting means 21 and 22.
