PURPOSE:To provide a backlight device capable of increasing a light quantity projected toward a front surface side by improving the incident efficiency of light going toward the end face of a light transmission plate from a lamp enclosing body, and a liquid crystal display device using the backlight device. CONSTITUTION:In this backlight device; a bar-like lamp 30 installed at the end of the light transmission plate 10 is enclosed by the lamp enclosing body 40, and the light radiated from the lamp 30 is reflected by the reflection surface 45 of the lamp enclosing body 40 and guided to the plate 10, at least a part of the reflection surface of the lamp enclosing body 40 is formed as an elliptical curved surface 41, the center of light emission by the lamp 30 is set at the primary focus f1 of the curved surface 41 and the end face of the plate 10 is positioned at the secondary focus f2. Thus, all the light emitted from the lamp is guided to the plate 10 without being lost halfway. |
