The patient (1) lies on a foam sheet (2) which has sensors (3) carried in rows on bands built into its thickness. The sensors may be pressure operated and consist of polyurethane bags filled with glycerine, or humidity operated and constructed from metallic filaments. The sensor signals are converted to electrical signals (11), amplified (16) and then fed to an analogue to digital convertor (17) before entering a data processing unit (18). The data processing unit shows the distribution of the various parameters on a screen (19) or chart (20).
