<p>PURPOSE: To enable high volume-ratio data density by moving a columnar fiber-array having a data storage region in a plane and executing data storage operation between a transducer and a selected fiber. CONSTITUTION: A fiber-array-module 44 consisting of the array 42 of magnetically coated fibers 40 is contained in a housing 32 in a data storage assembly 30, and the data storage assembly 30 has a fiber extraction assembly 46 and a fiber return assembly 50. The fibers 40 have an X-Y array, and each fiber 40 is constituted slidably in the axial direction from the array 42. The selected fibers 40 are extracted from the array 42, and moved to the assemblies 46, 50 by a positioning system 54, and the places of the selected fibers 40 are aligned with a transducer. The fibers 40 are passed through the transducer, and data are written and read. According to the constitution, a plurality of the fibers 40 can be accessed in parallel.</p> |
