PURPOSE:To reduce the size of a recorder/reproducer while saving power by providing a first magnetic layer while adjusting the magnetizing direction specifically at room temperature. CONSTITUTION:A dielectric layer 2, a first magnetic layer 3, a second magnetic layer 4, a protective layer 5, and an overcoat layer 6 are laminated sequentially on a translucent substrate 1 to compose a magneto-optical recording medium. In the recording medium, the first magnetic layer 3 is magnetized at room temperature not in the perfectly vertical direction but in the direction between the vertical direction and the in-plane direction. Consequently, the combined exchanging force at room temperature acting from the first magnetic layer 3 onto the second magnetic layer 4 is reduced as compared with a conventional medium. Since the magnitude of initialization field for arranging the magnetizing direction of the second magnetic layer 4 can be reduced at the time of rewriting information, an initialization field generator can be reduced in size and, thereby, a recorder/reproducer can be reduced in size while saving power. |
