PURPOSE:To provide a small-sized fusion splicing machine for optical fibers capable of executing stable inter-electrode discharge. CONSTITUTION:This fusion splicing machine for optical fibers is constituted to execute the inter-electrode discharge by setting the optical fibers 3 of coated optical fiber ribbons 15 to be connected between discharge electrodes 1a and 1b facing each other opposite to each other via a spacing L and supplying discharge currents between these discharge electrodes 1a and 1b and to fusion splice the fibers 3 to each other with the discharge energy generated in such a manner. A discharge accelerator 6 of copper, etc., which accelerates the inter- electrode discharge by reducing the connecting resistance between the discharge electrodes 1a and 1b is arranged near the front end of the discharge electrode 1a so that the stable inter-electrode discharge between the discharge electrodes 1a and 1b is executed.
