Domestic and industrial solid waste containing organic hydrocarbons and other compounds are treated by pyrolysis, cracking and distillation. The waste (11) is first plastified in the first chamber of the reactor (14), then fed into a second chamber (15) where it is pyrolysed in the presence of water (12), producing solvent synthesis gas (13). The waste then passes to a third chamber (24) where it is cracked and a first distillation under reduced pressure occurs. The solvent gas is reintroduced in the fourth chamber (31) where further cracking occurs, followed by a second low pressure distillation in the fifth chamber (32). The distillates produced (E1 and E2) include the light hydrocarbon fractions. The heavy fractions, including tar and slag are removed from the fifth chamber (E3).
