The plate consists of two interlocking jaws (A,B), each with fixing lugs (5,14) and prongs (8,17) to engage with the edges of the separated bone fragments. The two jaws are joined together by toothed surfaces (12,16) of constant pitch which enable the interval between the prongs to be adjusted. The first jaw (A) is U-shaped when viewed from above and made with toothed inner surfaces (12) along part of its length, and prongs (8,9) on its two ends. The second one (B) is in the form of a rod which fits between the two sides of the first jaw and has a marker line (19) which can be set against a graduated scale (20) on the first jaw. The rod of the second jaw and the gap between the two sides of the first one can have a trapezoid cross-section to provide a wedging fit.
