Class 100(4) Apparatus for braking the carriage of a typewriter on its return to position to begin anew line and to bring it to typing position comprises a margin stop 13, Fig. 2, on margin rack 12 of carriage 1, which, on overshooting the position for beginning a line, strikes an arm 11a of a block 11 and slides it along a shaft 8 to engage a projection 11b thereon with arm 32a, Figs. 1, 2, of a bell-crank lever 32 pivoted on guide rod 31 pivoted to base plate 6 fixed to back of carriage frame 2, in lugs 6a of which shaft 8 is mounted. A rod 29 mounted in end plates 33b of a bracket 33 adjustably secured on arm 32b of lever 32, is moved by guide rod 31 through an initially tensioned compression spring 34 to turn cranked double-armed lever 14 pivoted at 15 on an extension of plate 6 at same level as pivot 30. A push rod 17 connected to an arm 14a of lever 14 is supported on pin 18 and slot 17a for slidable movement on frame 2 of machine end engages lever 20 to bring a loose dog 25 out of engagement with starwheel 26 by release rod 23. Movement of arm 14a is limited by stop 16 to a single escapement stop of rod 23. In this movement spring 34 acts as a rigid connection between levers 14, 32 on account of initial tension of spring, but when lever 14 meets stop 16, lever 32 and bracket 33 slide on rod 29 to swing rod 31 and compress spring 34 until the energy of carriage is absorbed. Remaining energy in spring acts in reverse direction on lever 32 and block 11 to urge the carriage back in the direction of typing. Just before reaching position for starting a line spring 34 has become released to such an extent to release and restore, by springs 21, 36, all the members of both bell-crank lever systems 14, 32. The dog 25 is also freed to return to its position of engagement with wheel 26 to hold carriage 1, in begin line. |
