In dismantling a bulky item (5) of nuclear plant into pieces of convenient size for transport where the item (5) is placed in an open-topped transport container (1) on the rim (12) of which is secured a cutting device which is used to cut the item (5) into two parts, the novelty is that the transport container (1) has a base (2) and an outer wall (3); the base (2) is placed on the bottom of a pond (4), the item (5) is placed onto the base (2) and the outer wall (3) is lowered around the item (5) and secured to the base (2).
