A device for producing real and virtual (unreal) spaces which are bounded by grid surfaces, interference patterns, so-called moiré shapes, being created when the luminaire is looked at. This object is achieved according to the invention by forming a space which is illuminated by at least one light source, is bounded by at least one transparent wall surface (1) which can be structured like a moiré, and at least one mirror (3, 4). When the viewer looks from outside through the transparent regions of the grid surface (1) into the space he looks onto the side of a grid surface (1, 2) facing the inner space or he sees its image in one of the mirrors (3, 4), either through simple reflection or through multiple reflection on a plurality of mirrors whose reflecting sides always face the inner space. The viewer thus obtains the impression as if the space were bounded only by grid surfaces (1, 2). Grids (1, 2) and mirrors (3, 4) can be arranged on a support (6) by means of fastening means (10, 11, 12, 13). The invention is used as effect luminaire.
